VfL Bochum’s U19 team has played its first matches of the year in Bavaria. Coach David Siebers is returning to the Ruhr region with a good feeling.
VfL Bochum’s U19 team has resumed play after a month-long break with a double header of friendly matches. Coach David Siebers’ team traveled to Bavaria for matches against 1. FC Nürnberg on Saturday and Bayern Munich a day later. Siebers said that he and his players had gained “a lot of insights” after a “balanced weekend.”
After Bochum initially lost 2-4 (0-0) to the club’s youth team, they celebrated a 3-1 (1-1) victory against Bayern the following day. “We are naturally satisfied with the goals we scored,” said Siebers. “We’re not happy with the four goals we conceded in the first game against Nuremberg, nor with our performance in the first game.”
VfL quickly fell behind 0-2 after the break (56th, 59th). However, they managed to equalize through Luis Pick (72nd) and Prince Agyemang (82nd). “We weren’t able to hold on to this result and ended up conceding a third goal in the final stages,” said Siebers. “In the end, when we had another great chance to make it 3-3 and had opened up, we conceded the 2-4 in the third minute of stoppage time.”
It was a deserved defeat, “because many of our players were still finding their form in their first game after the long break and were far from their best,” said Siebers. The Bochum team was able to implement the results of the evening’s analysis the very next day – and that’s exactly what they did. Against Bayern, Pick once again scored Bochum’s first goal (29th minute). A powerful shot flew into the top left corner. Bayern grew stronger and equalized (39th minute). VfL had to work hard to avoid falling behind and also missed a penalty shortly before half-time. “We seem to have found the right words at half-time and made the right changes,” said Siebers. “As a result, if you take the four halves we played this weekend, we played our best half.” Many chances went unused at first, until Gustav Schjott (67′) and Daryl Tschoumy Nana (72′) scored the final goals after two set pieces. “We’re going home feeling good because we won the second game,” Siebers explained. In addition to Nana and Agyemang, Ole Van Eck and Janek Herzberg also celebrated their comeback for VfL. The next test match is scheduled for this coming weekend. VfL Bochum will then face Werder Bremen at home (January 25, 2 p.m.). with gp
