The first matchday of the new season in the Regionalliga West had a few surprises in store. Some players stood out in particular.
The first matchday of the new season in the Regionalliga West has been played. Some players proved to be real guarantors of success for their respective teams at the opening of the season.
Nils Winter (Rot-Weiß Oberhausen):
In the opening match of the new season last Friday evening, RWO won against the visitors from Alemannia Aachen with 2:1 (2:0). Oberhausen’s leading player Nils Winter scored directly after three minutes with his first shot on goal in the new season, marking the first goal of the new season.
Kim Sané (SG Wattenscheid 09):
Although SG Wattenscheid 09 lost their opening match against title aspirants Preußen Münster 1:4, it was still a special day for the older brother of Bayern star Leroy Sané. Kim Sané signed a contract with the SGW just before the start of the season and promptly repaid the faith placed in him by scoring the first goal for Wattenscheid.
Damjan Marceta (SV Rödinghausen):
SV Rödinghausen promptly put an exclamation mark on their first game of the season against 1. FC Köln II. Rödinghausen’s goal scorer Damjan Marceta was particularly in focus. Against Cologne, Marceta put SV in the lead from the spot. After the break, the Serbian then scored a brace and paved the way for his team to win 5:0.
Cihan Özkara (Rot Weiss Ahlen):
Rot Weiss Ahlen celebrated a surprise victory over Wuppertaler SV on the first matchday of the Regionalliga. The Ahlen team owes this success not least to attacker Cihan Özkara. Özkara was one of the most eye-catching players in the RWA attack against WSV and was right on target when he scored the decisive goal to make the final score 2:1.
Daniel Hammel (1. FC Kaan-Marienborn):
The team promoted from the Oberliga Westfalen made it more than just exciting in their league opener against Borussia Mönchengladbach II. Until shortly before the final whistle, FC was trailing 0:1. However, 29-year-old Daniel Hammel scored a brace in literally the last second to give his side a 2-1 win and their first three points of the season.
Justin Heekeren (FC Schalke 04 II) / Steffen Westphal (SV Lippstadt 08):
The two goalkeepers Justin Heekeren and Steffen Westphal were the only keepers on this match day who kept a clean sheet. The fact that both kept their boxes clean meant that the respective teams were able to win their games narrowly. S04 won 1:0 against SV Straelen, Lippstadt won 1:0 at Fortuna Köln.
