Tom Krauß departs from the U21s ailing

Schalke midfielder Tom Krauß is ailing and has left the DFB quarters. The league match against Leverkusen is scheduled for Saturday.

Last Friday, FC Schalke 04’s Tom Krauß was still on the pitch in the national team kit for the U21 international against Japan – but the 21-year-old will miss his second scheduled appearance for the German junior team.

On Sunday, Krauß left the German Football Association’s quarters in Frankfurt am Main with an ailment, thus foregoing the trip to the international match against Romania in Sibiu (Tuesday, 6.15 pm/ProSieben Maxx).

The DFB did not provide any further details on Tom Krauß’ state of health. According to reports, however, it is only a precautionary measure. The midfielder should therefore be available next weekend for the home match against Bayer Leverkusen (Saturday, 3.30pm/Sky and here in the live ticker).

Schalke’s Krauß was not the only player to miss the last official test match with U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo before the European Championship finals. Wolfsburg’s Kilian Fischer also went home, plagued by muscle problems. The duel with co-host Romania is the last acid test before the European Championship there and in Georgia (21 June to 8 July).

Antonio Di Salvo’s team will face Israel, the Czech Republic and England in the group phase of the finals. In June, the team will prepare for the tournament in a training camp in South Tyrol. The national coach already had to do without several players who were injured or called up to the senior national team.

Defensive man Tom Krauß, who moved to Gelsenkirchen on loan from RB Leipzig last summer, has played all 25 Bundesliga games for FC Schalke 04 this season. As a stabilising element in central midfield, he has helped Schalke, once down in the table, get back into the fight to stay in the league and still have every chance of doing so.
