Third division club Rot-Weiss Essen are in the international break. Marvin Obuz provided three assists against BVB II ahead of the match-free league weekend.
Rot-Weiss Essen put in a cohesive team performance in their 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund II, but one player still stood out: Marvin Obuz.
The Essen winger contributed three assists to the team’s tenth home win of the season. The 22-year-old set up the goals for 1:0 and 3:0 with a perfect cross and also took the penalty, which Moussa Doumbouya converted to make it 2:0.
Obuz’s assists were eleven to 13, making the Cologne native the top assist provider in the 3rd division, ahead of Oliver Batista Meier and Simon Skarlatidis (both eleven). And that’s not all: even in the all-time rankings, the right winger has every chance of climbing up a few places. The all-time record for the most assists in a third division season is held by Baris Atik. The 1. FC Magdeburg attacker provided a sensational 22 assists in the 2021/22 promotion season – an unprecedented figure.
Can Obuz set this record? He still needs nine assists in the remaining eight games to do so. A very challenging, but not impossible task. At least the top three is definitely realistic if Obuz can confirm his form in the final spurt of the season. He is followed by Marc Schnatterer (19 assists for Heidenheim, 2012/13) and Robert Zillner (18 assists for Unterhaching, 2009/10)
He listens, implements and has the ambition to play in more than just the 3rd division. He backs that up with his scoring. I don’t think he has any business playing in the 3rd division next year.
Christoph Dabrowski
Head coach Christoph Dabrowski knows that Essen’s number eleven, who is on loan from Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln until the end of the season, is in great shape. When asked by RS after the game against BVB II, he said of Obuz: “The boy is simply fun. He listens, implements and has the ambition to play in more than just the 3rd division. He backs that up with his scoring. I don’t think he has any business playing in the 3rd division next year.”
Dabrowski has also played a not inconsiderable part in Marvin Obuz’s development. In the first eleven games, the technically strong winger’s engine still stuttered and he needed time to develop and adapt to the robust third division soccer.
However, the Essen coach continued to back the 22-year-old and placed his trust in him, which is now being repaid. Since the twelfth matchday, Obuz has been directly involved in 18 goals in 19 games. If Rot-Weiss Essen have their way, they want to increase this tally in the coming games
