A year ago, this news would have been absurd, but now the transfer is real. Victor Boniface is moving from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to Werder Bremen.
On the final day of the transfer window, SV Werder Bremen’s management has secured yet another transfer. The Green-Whites are loaning striker Victor Boniface from league rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen for one year. This was announced by Peter Niemeyer, head of professional soccer at SVW, on Monday evening. “We are delighted to have completed the loan and to have Victor on board. He has performed excellently in the Bundesliga and proven his qualities. We are convinced that he can continue this with us,” he said. Just over a year ago, Boniface was one of the most sought-after strikers in the Bundesliga. He has since fallen behind his rival Patrik Schick and was actually supposed to move to AC Milan. However, the loan fell through during the medical examination.Head coach Horst Steffen also sees the center forward as a major reinforcement. “Victor is physically very strong, has a very good finish and good pace. He shone as a goalscorer and playmaker in Bayer’s championship season. I am sure that he can be a very important factor for our team this season,” he said.
In Bremen, the center forward position has been a question mark up to now. None of the candidates in the squad had lived up to expectations so far. Now Boniface is coming.
“The talks with the people in charge convinced me to make the move to Werder. I want to contribute with my performances so that we can achieve our common goals this season. I’m looking forward to my new team and my time at Werder,” he said.
Boniface comes with a recommendation of 61 competitive games (32 goals) for Bayer Leverkusen. Prior to that, he scored 17 times in 51 games for Union Saint-Gilloise. Before joining the Belgians, he played for Bodø Glimt in Norway. He scored 23 goals in 66 competitive games. The 24-year-old has also made 13 appearances for the Nigerian national team.
