FC Schalke have made their third winter transfer. With Michael Frey, a new attacker was signed.
FC Schalke has completed its third loan transfer ahead of the rest of the Bundesliga season. After Jere Uronen (Stade Brest) and Niklas Tauer (FSV Mainz), FC Schalke has also signed Michael Frey. The attacker will initially be loaned out by Belgian club Royal Antwerp until the summer. After that, there will be an option to buy for the Royal Blues.
A new striker was needed because Sebastian Polter injured his cruciate ligament and S04 coach Thomas Reis had only one striker left in Simon Terodde. Now he has a second central attacker.
Reis emphasised after the signing: “Michael has a good presence on the pitch and moves skilfully in the dangerous spaces. He is nasty for any defender to defend. That is exactly what I want to see from the entire team. I’m pleased that we were able to gain an experienced player in Michael, who will help us immediately.”
Frey could be an option as early as Saturday (3:30pm) at Eintracht Frankfurt. He is happy to be with the Knappen now: “I am happy to be at Schalke and to be able to be on the pitch with the team on Friday. I will do everything I can to fit into the team as quickly as possible so that we can collect points together. “
Peter Knäbel, member of the S04 board, explains why an attacker had to be brought in when a fast winger was actually at the top of the list: “After Sebastian Polter’s absence due to injury, we had to react in the centre of attack. We clearly succeeded in doing so with Michael, with him we have gained a big, physically robust and dynamic centre-forward who will close the gap that has arisen in the offensive.”
Frey played 14 games for Royal Antwerpen this season, scoring seven goals.
