The winter transfer period is about to officially start. What could happen at Borussia Dortmund, VfL Bochum and FC Schalke 04.
This coming Sunday marks the start of a new year – and at the same time the winter transfer window opens. During January, German clubs have the opportunity to strengthen – or thin out – their squads for the second half of the season. This overview shows where the Revier clubs Borussia Dortmund, FC Schalke 04 and VfL Bochum are in need and where there could be departures.
Borussia Dortmund
The big transfer offensive at BVB took place last summer. Traditionally, less happens in the winter. Despite the mixed first half of the season, this will not change this season, as those responsible have already let it be known. Of course, there could still be some movement in the squad. Candidates for departures would be, for example, Nico Schulz, who is no longer considered, or Felix Passlack, a little player – provided there are interested parties.
There will be one addition to head coach Edin Terzic’s team. After the departure of assistant Peter Hermann due to health reasons, Dortmund is looking for a new co-coach. According to media reports, Armin Reutershahn is the favourite. The experienced 62-year-old assisted at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the pre-season and previously at Eintracht Frankfurt, TSG Hoffenheim and VfB Stuttgart, among others.
The big personnel questions at BVB relate more to the coming summer and will have to be clarified in the course of the second half of the season: Will the veterans Marco Reus and Mats Hummels receive new contracts? Will striker Youssoufa Moukoko extend his contract? And what will happen with superstar Jude Bellingham?
