Trio leaves – Defender departs after 135 Oberliga games

SpVg Schonnebeck bids farewell to a center back after three and a half years. Two other players are also leaving.

SpVg Schonnebeck bids farewell to Thorben Kern. The contract with center back Thorben Kern has been terminated by mutual agreement. The 25-year-old joined the Schwalben in the summer of 2022 and played 117 competitive games in three and a half years, scoring seven goals as a center back. Schonnebeck’s sporting director Christian Leben explained: “After open and respectful discussions, we agreed with Thorben to terminate the existing contract prematurely. Over the past three and a half years, his performances have made an important contribution to the sporting development of our club. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Thorben for this.”

And Kern is not the only one leaving: Leon Bachmann and Henri Kvesa are also leaving Oberliga club SpVg Schonnebeck. While defensive midfielder Bachmann is joining Landesliga club 1. FC Wülfrath with immediate effect, Kvesa, who is at home in defensive midfield, is going on loan to SG Essen-Schönebeck, also in the Landesliga, until the end of the season. “Leon will help us enormously in terms of balance and stability between offense and defense. I am very happy that it has finally worked out to see him in the FCW jersey in the future,” said Wülfrath coach Joscha Weber. The 24-year-old Bachmann received his football training in the youth academies of FC Schalke 04 and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. In Oberhausen, he took on responsibility early on and captained the U19 team. At senior level, Leon played for clubs including TVD Velbert, SpVg Schonnebeck, and SpVg Erkenschwick in the Oberliga Westfalen and Oberliga Niederrhein, gaining valuable experience. “Leon stands for commitment and mentality and will strengthen our team both on and off the pitch,” writes the club from Wülfrath confidently. In the Landesliga Niederrhein 1, promoted 1. FC Wülfrath is fighting against relegation and can certainly use Bachmann’s help.

Kvesa is 19 years old and is set to return to playing for SG Essen-Schönebeck in the Landesliga Niederrhein 2. He should “take the next step in his development. He will then return to Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck,” writes the Oberliga club. The defensive midfielder moved from FC Kray’s U19 team to the Schwalben in the summer of 2023. With SG Essen-Schönebeck, he will also be playing against relegation in the Landesliga Niederrhein 2. Schönebeck is currently just above the relegation zone with 17 points, level on points with FC Kray and one point ahead of Oberliga relegation candidates Sportfreunde Niederwenigern.
