OGC Nice could have a change of coach during the international break: Lucien Favre is on the verge of quitting. Here’s what two ex-Schalkers have to do with it.
Only eight points from eight games: Former BVB coach Lucien Favre is about to be sacked by OGC Nice. The former Borussia Dortmund coach only took over the French top club in the summer. However, the Swiss coach got off to a bad start.
In the first twelve competitive games since his return – Favre already coached the club between 2016 and 2018 – Nice managed just three wins. After just two victories in Ligue 1, they are twelfth in the table. In the Conference League, too, they only managed two 1-1 draws against 1. FC Köln and Partizan Belgrade. Too little for the club’s own demands: According to the broadcaster “RMC Sports”, a decision to part ways with the club and the football coach has already been made.
In Nice’s 1-0 defeat to Angers SCO last weekend, two former Schalke players were at the forefront of the action: OGC defender Jean-Clair Todibo (on loan from Barcelona to Schalke 04 from January to June 2020), who was shown the red card after just nine seconds for an emergency stop. It was the fastest sending-off ever in the French top flight. The winning goal for Angers was also scored by a former Schalke player: Nabil Bentaleb, who has been active for SCO since last season and captained the team in recent games, scored the 1-0 winner in the 43rd minute with his first goal of the season.
A successor for Lucien Favre is also said to be in the starting blocks: Ex-PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino is expected to take over on the sidelines at Cologne’s Conference League opponents.
