The first Saturday of the Regionalliga West season is over. Two of the top teams allowed themselves to slip up right at the start.
After Rot-Weiß Oberhausen opened the season on Friday evening with a 2-1 victory over Alemannia Aachen, twelve other teams followed suit on Saturday. Two of the favourites stumbled right away.
Preußen Münster – SG Wattenscheid 09 4:1
The starting position was clear: One of the top favourites in the league receives the promoted team from Wattenscheid in front of their home crowd. But Preußen Münster were quickly given a cold shower. Kim Sane, older brother of Sidi and Leroy and newcomer to the SGW, put the visitors in front after only 12 minutes. But Andrew Wooten had the quick answer ready (15.). SCP took control of the game, but shortly before the break Sane had a brace on his foot. The 27-year-old failed in a one-on-one with Maximilian Schulze Niehus. Almost at the break, referee Martin Ulankiewicz pointed to the spot: a penalty for Prussia, which Henok Teklab converted confidently.
In the second half, the visitors did not give up, but the equaliser did not come. Instead, Alexander Hahn put the lid on it in the 79th minute after a corner. Shortly afterwards, Darius Ghindovean lofted home the ball to make it 4-1 (81st minute).
Wuppertaler SV – RW Ahlen 1:2
Almost everyone considers Wuppertaler SV to be one of the absolute top favourites for promotion. And the red-and-blue team started the season with a corner variation: Flat cross Stiepermann, goal Prokoph, 1:0 (19.). Otherwise, both teams played a tactical first half in which both teams were more concerned with safety.
After the break, there was a turbulent scene. Semih Güler was on his way to a safe 2:0 lead when he was staked out in front of the empty goal at the last second. In return, Christian Skoda shocked the Wuppertal team with the 1:1 (51.). Shortly afterwards, Sebastian Patzler made a big mistake and let a supposedly harmless shot fall directly at the feet of Cihan Özkara – and suddenly it was 1:2 (61.). WSV couldn’t find their way back into the game and were dealt a heavy blow right at the start of the season.
Fortuna Köln – SV Lippstadt 08 0:1
On paper, Fortuna are once again one of the top teams in the Regionalliga West. But SV Lippstadt were not impressed by this. On the contrary: Henri Carlo Matter even gave the visitors the lead (26th). In the second half, the Fortunes did not manage to score again. This was Lippstadt’s first surprise of the season.
1. FC Düren – 1. FC Bocholt 3:1
In the duel of the promoted teams, it was the visitors who took the lead at first. And who, if not Marcel Platzek, should be responsible for that. The top scorer converted a penalty kick to make it 1:0 (35th). But shortly before the break, Marc Brasnic scored the 1:1 with a dream free kick (42.).
And the team from Düren continued their performance in the second half. Platzek hit the crossbar for the Bocholt side, but Brasnic was on hand again in the direct counterattack to give them the lead (56). A few minutes later, the hosts also hit the crossbar, but from there the ball bounced to Sebastian Wickl and into the goal for 3:1 (62.). That should be enough for the Düreners to send a first exclamation mark to the competition.
SV Rödinghausen – 1. FC Köln II 5:0
It was definitely not the day of the second teams. It got even worse for the Cologne team. First Damjan Marceta gave SC Wiedenbrück the lead with a penalty kick (30th), then Rijad Smajic was shown a yellow card. Marceta (52.), Kevin Hoffemeier (57.), Vincent Schaub (77.) and Ramien Safi (78.) increased the lead and catapulted SV to the top of the table.
Fortuna Düsseldorf II – SC Wiedenbrück 1:2
Things didn’t go any better for Fortuna Düsseldorf’s second team either. Against SC Wiedenbrück, they lost 1:2 (17./47.) after an early 1:0 lead (12.). On Sunday, 1. FC Kaan-Marienborn against Borussia Mönchengladbach II (2 p.m.) and FC Schalke 04 II against SV Straelen (4 p.m.) round off the first matchday.
