SpVg Schonnebeck are working hard in preparation to be in top form for the season opener. Two more test matches are on the agenda.
Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck is on the home stretch of its summer preparations. On Sunday, the team of veteran coach Dirk Tönnies tested with Westfalen-Oberliga team ASC Dortmund and conceded a 1:2 defeat. Newcomer Ebeny Nguimba’s goal to equalise the score was not enough for a successful result.
The coach saw an average performance from his team. “It was two different halves. In the first half, we had a hard time getting into the game and made too many individual mistakes. ASC Dortmund was very flexible and overall the better team. After the change of ends, we showed a different face, were much more aggressive and would have deserved the 2:2,” Tönnies summed up.
The next step for the Swallows is a test match double-header. First, on Tuesday (26 July, 7.30 p.m.), the Oberliga team will be at home to relegated Westfalia Herne. There, Tönnies expects a good test for everyday league life: “In Herne, we will have a lot of ball possession and want to rehearse procedures in the offensive area. We want to prevent the opponent’s switching game. “
The boys should enjoy playing in front of a hopefully great crowd at Bäuminghausstraße. In relation to the first matchday in Nettetal, however, this test match has no sporting significance.

Only four days later (30 July, 2 p.m.), the absolute highlight of the preparation will take place – the showdown with Rot-Weiss Essen, promoted from the Third League. The last time the two city neighbours met was in March 2022 in the Lower Rhine Cup, when the Red-Whites won 3:0. Now the match against RWE is the last test before the start of the season at Union Nettetal (7 August, 3.15 pm).
The 48-year-old Tönnies is looking forward to the challenge: “Rot-Weiss Essen is a very nice task for us. We will certainly have to work a lot against the ball there. The boys should enjoy playing in front of what we hope will be a great crowd at Bäuminghausstraße. In relation to the first matchday in Nettetal, however, this test match has no sporting significance. “
