Two third-division teams in the final; the first underdogs have also made it through

The state cup tournaments have their first finalists. Two third-division teams are among them—including one in Westphalia.

Year after year, the state cup tournaments offer the potential for lower-division teams to pull off surprises and advance to the DFB-Pokal. This year, SC St. Tönis, a team from the Lower Rhine Oberliga, could be one such squad.

After their Oberliga semifinal against FC Büderich, it is clear that SC St. Tönis will face either 1. FC Bocholt or MSV Duisburg in the Lower Rhine Cup final.

If the Zebras reach the final and finish the 3. Liga in one of the top four spots, their DFB Cup participation would be secured in advance.

With FK Pirmasens and VfR Mannheim, two other Oberliga clubs have already secured their spots as finalists. On the other hand, there are, of course, clear favorites: The top 3. Liga clubs SC Verl and SV Wehen Wiesbaden have also reached the finals of their state cups.
