Schalkes U23 lost at SG Wattenscheid 09 on Sunday. Coach Jakob Fimpel was not happy with many things. And found clear words for it.
After four wins in a row and a draw against Rot Weiss Ahlen, FC Schalke 04’s U23s suffered another defeat on Sunday, losing 2-1 to SG Wattenscheid. Coach Jakob Fimpel was correspondingly annoyed.
Not so much because of the result. That can always happen against a passionately fighting home team in a derby with such a young team. But the Königsblauen played too pomadically in front of 997 spectators in the Lohrheide stadium in Wattenscheid. The relegation candidates, who had previously failed to win nine games, took the gloves off the Knappen.
And that was with announcement from the SGW side, as Kim Sané revealed. “Congratulations to Wattenscheid on a well-deserved victory,” Fimpel explained afterwards. “Deserved because on the other side was a team with a top energy that took the backdrop and created a game that is not our game at all.”
Wattenscheid grated on Schalke’s playful advantages in a multitude of duels. The S04 could not do much with the many ball possession. “The key moments were against us. After 0:2 it’s hard not to lose your head for such a young squad. We did that a bit,” analysed Fimpel.
But that was not the only mistake in the game, he said. “The second point why we couldn’t turn the game around was that all the situations we had towards goal were catastrophically finished. Without the goal threat that we usually exude,” Fimpel was annoyed. “Accordingly, I lacked the absolute, final will to score the goal. “
Even a substitution of young professional Kerim Calhanoglu, who had delivered a rather uninspired performance, did not bring the hoped-for turnaround after half-time. Calhanoglu then limped to the coach’s bench. But an injury was not the reason for the substitution, Fimpel said. “Kerim did not have an injury. His substitution had tactical reasons. We had hoped for a bit more power in the offensive. It was there in the second half. But all in all, the finishes were too weak.”
But it wasn’t just the offensive, professional goalkeeper Justin Heekeren also had a very bad day. He did not look good when he conceded the first goal – and he himself caused the penalty before the 0:2. Schalke II slipped to sixth place in the table as a result of the defeat.
