On Wednesday evening, the Regionalliga West clubs will be looking towards Gelsenkirchen rather than Qatar. Because in the league, a catch-up game is on the agenda.
FC Schalke 04 II welcomes SC Preußen Münster for a catch-up game on Wednesday (23 November 6pm, RevierSport live ticker).
With a win, the Schalke team could make the Regionalliga West exciting again. On the other hand, SCP could pull away from the competition to seven points with a win. An exciting constellation.
RevierSport spoke to Schalke II coach Jakob Fimpel ahead of the match.
Jakob Fimpel, only one win from the last six games: Is your team currently going through the most difficult phase of the season?
We have certainly dropped points carelessly in some games. But the performances were always very stable. In addition, with Aachen and Gladbach, we recently had teams that came from a winning streak.
Your team is often described by competitors as the strongest team in the Regionalliga West. Do you have a similar opinion?
That’s nice to hear, but for me the comparison with the other teams is not decisive. Every team stands for its own identity. For me, it’s much more important how our game develops over the course of the season.
How satisfied are you overall with the series?
I’m very happy with our team unity and the togetherness among the guys. Football-wise, we’re doing a lot of things well. But we can still be more determined when it comes to scoring goals.
What must come together on Wednesday for Schalke’s U23s to beat Preußen Münster?
Our games so far have all shown that effectiveness is the big issue for us. We’ve had good opportunities to score in every game so far, but haven’t always been consistent enough.
Independent on this make-up game: Do you think Preußen Münster will be promoted in the end?
Münster makes the most stable impression for me so far. They’re also very well-staffed across the board, which means they’re always able to compensate for absences.
Do you actually look at the table before the game? Schalke would be in the thick of the promotion race if they won the game.
I always skim the table after our games, but I don’t have all the gaps in detail in my head. Overall, though, the teams are very close in both directions.
At the moment, some professionals are helping out. How satisfied are you with the loans from above?
With the support from the pros, both sides benefit: We give the guys valuable playing time. In return, they fit in well with the team, are committed and motivated. It is certainly an advantage that some of the boys already know each other from our youth teams.
