Eight of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s U23 players have now officially left the club. Meanwhile, one talent will be part of the Bundesliga squad in the future.
After a strong season that saw them narrowly miss out on the runners-up spot in the Regionalliga West, there is a lot going on in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s U23 squad.
The club has officially released eight players from the reserve team. RS had already reported on the departures of Per Lockl, Phil Beckhoff, Kaan Kurt and Steffen Meuer. In addition, Ben Zich, Enrique Lofolomo, Tom Gaal and Leon Schütz will continue their careers elsewhere.
It is largely unknown for which clubs they will play next season. Only Lockl has already been introduced by his future club – he is moving to third-division club Waldhof Mannheim.
“Behind all the boys lies an eventful time at Borussia,” Gladbach’s NLZ director Mirko Sandmöller is quoted as saying. “Some of them, such as Kaan Kurt and Tom Gaal, are children of this club, they grew up here. Now they will each take a new path. We thank them for their commitment and wish them all the best for their sporting and private future. “
Meanwhile, two more talents remain at the club. U19 player Tony Reitz will start playing for the U23s in the summer and take his first steps at senior level.
Ibrahim Digberekou’s performances in the A-Junioren Bundesliga West recommended him for even higher tasks. The 18-year-old Belgian has been signed to a professional contract, Borussia announced on Thursday.
“I have been playing for Borussia since U11. It is of course my dream to become a professional here. In the coming period, I have to keep working hard on myself to be able to achieve my big goal in the future,” Digberekou said, happy about his promotion. The central defender was a regular player in Gladbach’s A-youth and has already made several appearances for junior national teams in Belgium.
“We are very happy that Ibo, despite many other offers, has decided to continue on the same path with us and to commit himself to Borussia in the longer term,” says Sandmöller.
