American international footballer Weston McKennie caused a stir in the World Cup group match against England not only with his eye-catching hairstyle in national colours, but also with a curiosity.
The 24-year-old former Schalke player from Juventus Turin wiped his obviously sweaty hands on a green photographer’s shirt before a throw-in towards the end of the first half in Al-Chaur on Friday evening. The photo reporter looked irritated when the waistcoat he was wearing was misappropriated. Then the former Schalke professional McKennie took the throw-in. Nothing worthwhile came of it.
The match between the USA and England ended in a 0-0 draw. By the way, Haji Wright, another former Schalke player, was in the starting eleven for the Americans. The 24-year-old attacker played a total of 29 games for the Königsblauen between 2016 and 2019, seven of them in the Bundesliga (one goal). He has been under contract with Turkish first division side Antalyaspor since the summer.
McKennie, one of the best players on the pitch against the Three Lions, joined the Knappenschmiede from FC Dallas in 2016 and left Gelsenkirchen in 2020 (initially on loan) for Juventus Turin after 75 professional games.
