VAR unplugged – this is how SCP reacted

Preußen Münster will have to answer questions from the DFB Control Committee after a fan unplugged the VAR on Sunday.

There has already been a lot of madness surrounding the topic of VAR. Another episode was added to the list during the second division match between SC Preußen Münster and Hertha BSC.

Shortly before the half-time whistle, the VAR intervened in the 44th minute after a scene in Preußen’s penalty area that the VAR deemed unclear. It was about a possible penalty for Berlin. When referee Felix Bickel went to the monitor to watch the duel between Berlin’s Michaël Cuisance and Münster’s Niko Koulis, the monitor suddenly failed.

As it turned out, a masked spectator from the active fan block had gained unauthorized access to the interior and pulled the plug on the technical equipment. The penalty decision was ultimately made by video referee Katrin Rafalski in Cologne.

The day after the incident, the second division club issued a statement on the events surrounding the VAR intervention in the 1-2 defeat to Hertha. “SC Preußen Münster regrets the incident and will do everything in its power to identify the perpetrator(s) and hold them accountable. In addition, measures were taken immediately to prevent similar incidents in the future. According to initial findings, this was a planned action – shortly after the technical failure, a banner was held up in the home block.“

On this stand: ”Pull the plug on VAR.” It worked, but it will probably not remain without consequences. The DFB has now also intervened. The DFB Control Committee has launched an investigation. “Due to this incident and the pyrotechnics that were set off, the Control Committee is initiating proceedings against Preußen Münster,” the DFB said in response to a dpa inquiry.
