Verl lost their two best players in this winter transfer window and still managed to draw with the league leaders. They deserved to win.
Oliver Batista Meier (returning to Dynamo Dresden) and Mael Corboz, the captain moved to Arminia Bielefeld, left SC Verl in the winter. In this respect, it was a bitter winter transfer period for the East Westphalians.
And yet: Verl always manages to pull itself together and defy the personnel setbacks in the form of departures in every transfer window. This was also the case last weekend in the 1-1 draw against SSV Jahn Regensburg. The visitors from North Rhine-Westphalia could even have won at the league leaders.
In it would have been, is also a good keyword: because actually Maximilian Wolfram (80th) had put the guests from Verl in the lead. According to the referee, SSV keeper Alexander Weidinger had scraped the ball off the line. But that was not the case. Even before the TV pictures were viewed, the Verl striker was certain on “Magenta Sport”: “I don’t think it’s just my feeling. I don’t need to say anything more about that. I know he doesn’t do it on purpose. But a win was taken away from us.”
And every further replay showed clearly: the ball was fully inside – actually 2:1 for Verl. After studying the images, the guests were all the more annoyed.
“I only got angry when I heard from behind that it was half a meter. Then I got my second yellow card, which was not undeserved. We all make mistakes, but you were actually in an ideal position. It’s not a counterattack or anything like that where I have a different angle. It should be judged better, but that happens too,” said Alexander Ende.
Verl’s coach and his players will have the opportunity to score more goals that are recognized on Tuesday (January 23, 7 p.m.) against 1. FC Saarbrücken.
