VfL Bochum aim to break fan record in derby against SGS Essen

Derby time in the women’s DFB Cup. VfL Bochum wants a surprise against SGS Essen at the Ruhrstadion.

While the women of VfL Bochum have already played three competitive matches (two wins in the Regionalliga West and one in the DFB Cup against Fortuna Köln), SGS Essen have their first of the season coming up.

So when VfL and SGS meet in the 2nd round of the DFB Cup on Saturday (9 September 1pm) (many teams had a bye in the first round here), it will be a cold start for SGS. Nevertheless, as a Bundesliga team, the Essen women are naturally the favourites. However, coach Markus Högner’s team will be warned against ambitious Bochum women who want to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga.

VfL coach Kyra Malinowski told RS before the match: “The anticipation is great, the whole team is looking forward to the match. One thing is for sure, the roles are clearly distributed. Essen is the favourite, maybe we have the advantage that we are already in the competition. “

We have another quality in the team

Kyra Malinowski

Last year, the VfL women were knocked out of the cup in the second round – they lost 1-0 to SV Meppen, who were in the Bundesliga at the time. This time, Malinowski thinks that her team will be able to make more offensive pinpricks. Her reason: “We have a different quality in the team. We hope to create one or two chances.”

And in front of a great crowd, because the derby will be played in the Ruhrstadion. The previous record of 1500 spectators (set in the first-round win against Fortuna Köln) is set to fall. The coach is in good spirits because SGS will also have fans in their luggage: “I think that the Essen team will also arrive with some fans. It is also a derby and a highlight for them. I’m firmly assuming that we’ll break 1500.”

That would give the cup match a worthy setting, and for Malinowski it is also a special match because she has a past in Essen, as she recalls: “I played there myself, also under coach Markus Högner. There is a connection there, because I also took my first steps as a coach in Essen. “
