VfL Bochum have also won their third test match. The next new signing scores in the win against Aachen
In the first “real test”, as new coach Peter Zeidler put it after the two victories against Oberliga clubs, VfL Bochum managed a 1:0 win against Alemannia Aachen on Friday evening. After Ibrahima Sissoko on Wednesday, Dani De Wit was the next new signing to score a debut goal
The Bundesliga side started the game in control but in a sluggish mood. The promoted third-division side, on the other hand, used the match against a higher-ranked opponent as preparation for the cup match against Holstein Kiel in August. The motto? Defensive work and counter-attacks.
The latter certainly posed problems for the Bochum defense in front of Patrick Drewes, who was allowed to prove himself after Niclas Thiede on Wednesday. Example: In the 20th minute, a counter-attack after a long pass from Noah Loosli was not consistently cleared – the second attempt via Ismail Harnafi was carelessly wasted by Leandro Putaro on the bumpy pitch.
After just under 25 minutes, VfL upped the tempo and were mostly dangerous down the wings, where both Maximilian Wittek and Jordi Osei-Tutu were lively. However, the final precision was lacking for clear finishes, let alone chances. A deflected direct shot from De Wit posed no problem for Marcel Johnen
In the 39th minute, the visitors made it more precise! Felix Passlack sent a superb cross into the center of the penalty area, where De Wit headed the ball into the far corner – his first goal for VfL Bochum.
There were no further clear goals before half-time. The exception: a free-kick from Lukas Scepanik, which Drewes saved well (43′).
VfL Bochum with sand in the gears after the break
As announced, Zeidler replaced his entire team – apart from keeper Drewes – at the break. The first curious chance came almost from the restart. Johnen shot at the onrushing Moritz Broschinski and the rebound from his back went just wide of the goal (46′).
The newly assembled squad found it difficult to get into the game. However, Heiner Backhaus’ team did not know how to take advantage of this and also made mass substitutions after 60 minutes.
The game lost its overall rhythm and structure and the tackles increased. It took until the next chance. Charlison Benschop forced Drewes into a strong save with a powerful shot from a half-right position (67′), before Gianluca Gaudino (72′), son of ex-VfL professional Maurizio, and Thilo Töpken (74′) missed. Bochum barely made an impact – Broschinski had the only shot, but missed from 16 meters (77′).
The game then fizzled out and the score remained 1-0.
Test matches continue for both clubs. Alemannia Aachen will face Eintracht Trier on Saturday (3 p.m.), VfL Bochum will play 1. FC Magdeburg a week later (July 20, 2 p.m.)
