VfL Bochum has set its sights on this third division player

VfL Bochum still has two games left to play in 2025. The winter break is approaching, and with it the January transfer window.

Five wins, one draw, and one defeat: since Uwe Rösler became coach of VfL Bochum, things have been going well for the second division club.

VfL has worked its way up from the bottom of the table to ninth place, and some are already eyeing the promotion spots. But there is still a long way to go. Perhaps VfL will be back on the attack in the new season – from match day one. Then Kevin Wiethaup could also be a Bochum player. According to this editorial team’s sources, VfL has set its sights on the 20-year-old attacking player from VfL Osnabrück.

Wiethaup, who can play in all positions in the center and also on the left wing, has only made eight appearances in the current season, playing a total of 372 minutes – without scoring a goal or providing an assist. Nevertheless, the former German U18 international is said to have great potential. This is also what Bochum’s database has revealed. That’s how VfL scouts came across the player from Bremer Brücke.

It remains to be seen whether Bochum will make a serious move for Wiethaup in the winter or wait until the summer. By then, the 1.79-meter player will be available on a free transfer. Other second division clubs, such as Eintracht Braunschweig, are also said to have put out feelers for him.

In any case, a few spots could open up in Bochum’s midfield for the new season. Kjätell Wätjen is on loan from Borussia Dortmund, Francis Onyeka is on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, and captain Matus Bero’s contract expires on June 30, 2026.

Before there could be changes to the squad in January 2026, VfL Bochum will first travel to Hannover 96 on Saturday (December 13, 8:30 p.m.).

Uwe Rösler said before the game: “This is a team with a very exciting coaching philosophy. Christian Titz did well in Magdeburg and is now making his mark at Hannover. But I still say it’s a 50-50 game. We can play a very good role in Hannover. We have to be brave and not make too many mistakes. Otherwise, Hannover will punish us with their strikers. But the way we play, we’ll also get our chances. A full stadium, a good game, there’s a lot at stake: I’m looking forward to this game, in which we can really prove ourselves again.”
