VfL Osnabrück beats Saarbrücken and overtakes RWE

VfL Osnabrück increases the pressure on its rivals and takes the lead. VfL wins 1-0 against 1. FC Saarbrücken. In order to allow the 1,200 away fans who had traveled to the game to support their team, kick-off was postponed by 30 minutes. There was a lot at stake for both teams. Crisis-stricken 1. FC Saarbrücken had been waiting for a win for 14 games, while VfL Osnabrück can dream of promotion. The wait continues for Saarbrücken, and Osnabrück can continue to dream: the visitors won 1-0 at Ludwigspark. Osnabrück, previously completely inconspicuous, promptly converted Lars Kehl’s first corner through Niklas Wiemann, who drove the ball over the line with his thigh.
Lukas Jonsson then kept VfL in the lead, with Dominic Baumann failing to get past the Osnabrück goalkeeper (23′). Saarbrücken pushed for the equalizer but was unable to convert its chances. Pick failed to score from distance in the 27th minute. The fact that FCS went into the break behind was down to their own failure to convert chances: after a corner, Robin Bormuth failed to score from close range at the far post (38′). And so they actually went into the break 0-1 down.

Points Table

Once again, the Saarland team came back onto the pitch as the dominant side. But the visitors also fought their way back into the game, which was now becoming increasingly open. Numerous Saarbrücken set pieces created danger, but no goals. In the closing stages, it was substitute Patrick Schmidt in particular who missed a number of good chances. And so the final score was 1-0 to VfL Osnabrück, who did not deserve to win but somehow managed to hold on to their lead. Osnabrück are now in the relegation play-off spot, while Saarbrücken are still waiting for their first three points and are in serious danger of being relegated.
