TSV 1860 Munich presented a new coach this week. And it is not Marco Antwerpen, who had been favored by some media. There are reasons for this.
It’s not really the English way to go about things or to leak confidential contract talks. The vice-president of TSV 1860 Munich seems to take a more relaxed view.
Because Hans Sitzberger, who was involved in the coaching decision, has now told the newspaper “tz” why Argirios Giannikis was chosen in the final selection and not Marco Antwerpen – Forecasting reported.
Sitzberger: “Argirios was simply the better candidate. He had the more coherent concept, also with a view to the summer. The way he presented it convinced everyone in our group – unlike Antwerp, who didn’t seem as clear in terms of content.”
Antwerpen, 52, has been out of a job at 1. FC Kaiserslautern since his leave of absence on May 10, 2022 (he took office on February 1, 2021). He previously coached Würzburger Kickers, Eintracht Braunschweig, Preußen Münster, Viktoria Köln and Rot Weiss Ahlen.
New 1860 coach Gianniks once also coached Rot-Weiss Essen
The new 1860 coach Giannikis also used to play soccer in the west. In October 2017, he took over Rot-Weiss Essen in a difficult situation in the table and was able to achieve an average of 1.88 points per game with the traditional club from the Ruhr region. Their time together at Hafenstrasse ended prematurely after Argirios Giannikis announced his transfer to VfR Aalen at the end of the season.
The soccer coach was most recently under contract in Greece. He took over the second division club PAS Giannia on July 1, 2019 and led the club to promotion to the first division. The following year, he successfully finished the season in eighth place. This did not go unnoticed by top Greek club AEK Athens, who brought him to the Greek capital in October 2021. Giannikis was released from his duties at AEK in March 2022. Around 14 months later, he signed a contract with TSV 1860 Munich.
