The ball will be rolling again in the Regionalliga West this weekend. The new season is about to get underway – and it has a highlight to offer right from the start. Alemannia Aachen will open the season against Wuppertaler SV.
It is the duel of two traditional clubs who have upgraded their squads this summer. The finger pointing is clear: TSV and WSV want promotion to the 3rd division, after the championship in the last two years went through heavyweights Preußen Münster and Rot-Weiss Essen.
In addition, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen made offensive claims in the title race. These were underpinned by the signings of renowned players such as Moritz Stoppelkamp and Oguzhan Kefkir.
The field of top favourites is completed by SV Rödinghausen. After the big upheaval with transfers like that of returnee Simon Engelmann or the impressive 8:0 test match victory against third league relegated SV Meppen at the weekend, the 2020 champions are considered to have chances. At the time, SVR voluntarily renounced promotion, now the club would probably take the step.
In our big coach survey, numerous coaches named Aachen, Wuppertal, Oberhausen and Rödinghausen as favourites for promotion. Teams such as Fortuna Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach II belong to the extended circle.
And what do the forecasting users think? Will one of the favourites win the race or will there be a big surprise? You can take part in our poll here. So far, just under 8,000 users have taken part (as of 6 p.m. on Monday). We would like to publish the result of the vote shortly before the season starts.
