The MSV Duisburg is stumbling through the 3rd division. In an interview with the WAZ, the president commented on many sensitive topics.
MSV Duisburg is in a very difficult situation. After the 0-1 defeat to leaders Jahn Regensburg, the long-standing club is still stumbling towards the Regionalliga West.
The gap between the first non-relegation place in the 3rd division is already eight points, with only 14 games left to play. Of those, MSV has eight away games – starting on Saturday (2 p.m.) at SC Verl.
Therefore, a lot has to come together for the “Zebras” to avoid relegation. For example, a series: in view of the numbers that are usually enough to avoid relegation, MSV now has to win every second game.
Looking at the previous numbers of the season, this seems utopian. But neither coach Boris Schommers, who also has numerous injuries to complain about, nor MSV president Ingo Wald want to throw in the towel prematurely.
We are talking to the sponsors and have already received confirmation from many of them that they will remain in the 4th division
Ingo Wald
In an interview with the WAZ, Wald emphasized with regard to a possible relegation: “Once again, I think it’s wrong to talk about the Regionalliga. Nevertheless, to answer the question: Of course, the aim would have to be to return to the 3rd division immediately. We are talking to the sponsors and many of them have already agreed to stay in the 4th division. Of course, we are also trying to win new sponsors.”
One thing is clear: the club has to deal with both scenarios, but relegation is currently more likely. It’s good that the Regionalliga West now has a permanent promotion place, and that the champions no longer have to go through the relegation play-offs.
With the rest of the season in mind, Wald told the WAZ: “As long as it is still mathematically possible, we should do everything we can to achieve this goal. We must not be distracted from this goal by other possible scenarios. Our approach must be for everyone in a position of responsibility to focus on avoiding relegation.”
