SG Wattenscheid 09 has parted ways with coach Christian Britscho. This is the relegated team’s reaction to their false start in the Oberliga Westfalen.

The SG Wattenscheid has made a decision about the future of coach Christian Britscho, which was announced for Monday evening – to the detriment of the 53-year-old coach. The traditional club has parted ways with Britscho.

After being relegated from the Regional League, the SGW failed to make a fresh start in the Oberliga Westfalen. Only one point is on the books after six match days. On Sunday, the Wattenscheid team lost 4-2 to SpVgg Erkenschwick in front of their home crowd. This defeat was obviously one too many for Britscho.

It is uncertain who will succeed the full-time police officer. For the time being, the club is relying on an interim solution with co-coach Timo Janczak.

“We as the board had to make a decision today that was very difficult for us,” sporting director Christian Pozo y Tamayo is quoted as saying in a statement on Britscho’s exit. On Monday morning he had left the coach’s future open to RS, but avoided making a commitment.

“At the beginning of the season, it was the case that we achieved poor results despite a decent performance. Now there is a tendency for the performances we put in to match the results,” explains Pozo y Tamayo. “For this reason, we felt compelled to set a new impulse. We thank Christian for the great cooperation, really appreciate him as a person and of course wish him only the best for the future.”

At the same time, the sporting director stressed that Britscho had done “great work and rendered outstanding services to this club” in recent years. Britscho had been in charge since the new start in the summer of 2020 and led Wattenscheid to their acclaimed return to the Regionalliga two years later. Relegation followed – and now the coach’s momentous false start in the Oberliga.
