Wattenscheid relegation postponed despite RWO win, Ahlen goes down at Düren

SG Wattenscheid has a mathematical chance of staying in the Regionalliga West despite losing to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. Ahlen conceded a heavy defeat.

The decision on who will be the third team to be relegated from the Regionalliga West is still pending after the opening of the 32nd matchday. SG Wattenscheid 09 and Rot Weiss Ahlen were both on the spot.

Only with a win could RWA have secured its place in the league. At 1. FC Düren, however, coach Markus Kaya’s team was on the losing side early on. Already in the 5th minute Markus Wipperfürth scored the lead for the hosts. In the second half, things got very bitter: After the 0:2 (53rd), substitutes Philipp Simon (67th, 71st), Ismail Harnafi (73rd), Yannik Schlößer (77th) and Marc Brasnic (87th) increased the score to 7:0 from Düren’s point of view.

This means that Wattenscheid still has a theoretical chance of staying in the league. However, the SGW failed to do anything about it. Coach Christian Britscho’s team lost 2-1 at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen late on, with Nico Klaß scoring for the home side (16th) and Felix Casalino equalizing for the 09ers in the second half (53rd). Shortly before the end, Anton Heinz scored the winning goal for RWO (83rd).

As a result, Wattenscheid is eight points behind Ahlen in the standings, but still expects to get the three points from the Cologne game (2:3/change 1. FC Köln II). At least that was the decision of the sports court of the West German Football Association in the first instance. Ahlen appealed, and a final ruling has not yet been issued. If Wattenscheid receives the points, the deficit will be five points with two games remaining.
