“We didn’t really let Schalke get into the game.”

There was great joy and relief at FC Augsburg after they advanced in the DFB Cup against FC Schalke 04.

Even though FC Schalke 04 is currently a struggling second division team, there is still a lot of respect for S04 in German soccer. This is also the case at FC Augsburg.

The Bavarians were very happy and relieved to have advanced to the DFB Cup round of 16 with a 3-0 win over the mighty Schalke.

“I was very satisfied with the first half and went into the break feeling good. We wanted to continue in the same vein, control the game and score more goals to decide the game early. But I was disappointed with most of the second half. We weren’t good on the ball, we weren’t good in the tackles, and we let the opposition back into the game. Today, the only goal was to get through to the next round, and I’m happy with the deserved victory, but the way we played after the break wasn’t what I had hoped for,” said Jess Thorup at the press conference.

FCA midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj, who once played for VfL Bochum, agreed with his coach and told FCA’s club media: “We’re through, so we can be satisfied. The first half was very good, we didn’t really let Schalke into the game. After the break, you could tell that the game against Dortmund had taken a lot out of us. Even though Schalke got into the game better as a result, we did well again towards the end and ultimately deserved to win.”
