“We had the chance to win every game”

DSC Wanne-Eickel have not been a top team this season. Nevertheless, the traditional club still has something to play for in the Westfalenliga 2.

The goals at DSC Wanne-Eickel have long since become somewhat more fundamental. Promotion from the Westfalenliga 2 to the Oberliga Westfalen is no longer an option for the Wanne-Eickel team this season. The summer overhaul was simply too big for that.

However, the DSC is not entering the new year without a plan or goal, even if the leading group seems to have already pulled away.

DSC coach Pascal Beilfuss on…

The first half of the league season: “It’s a pretty mixed conclusion. We had a really good start, then it was pretty mixed in terms of results in the last few weeks. That wasn’t nice. But the bottom line is that we’ve only lost five so far. That’s actually a good position to be in. It shows that we’re hard to beat. That’s good. What’s not good is the many high defeats and the many draws. But we’ve also had a major upheaval, so 21 points is actually perfectly okay. Our goals are still within reach.”

What was your best moment? “Winning against Sodingen in the 95th minute was of course nice. Or the goal from our goalkeeper in Hombruch was also great. Or even getting past SpVgg Horsthausen, a direct league rival, in the district cup. But there wasn’t just one moment.”

What was your worst moment? “There wasn’t one either. Generally speaking, it was the many heavy defeats. We had the chance to win in every game. The games this season are all so close. That really annoys me. On the positive side, though, the games were always close and we were never without a chance. But at some point, it’s not always just bad luck.”

The goals for 2024: “We want to get more points than in the first half of the season, that’s the team’s clear goal. We have a five-point lead over the relegation places, so we want to get away from that as quickly as possible. We also want to start a small winning streak, which unfortunately we didn’t manage in the first half of the season. We also want to win the district cup, but we have a big task ahead of us against Wacker Obercastrop. We also still have potential in terms of team spirit. But it’s normal that when you have 19 new people, they don’t immediately become a team just because the coach says, ‘You’re a team now’.”
