“We have to make sure we turn that off” – FCG has to work on that

After two wins in a row, FC Gütersloh suffered a 4-0 defeat against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on matchday 22. FCG coach Julian Hesse criticized his team.

FC Gütersloh were beaten again on match day 22 of the Regionalliga West after two consecutive wins. FCG lost 0:4 (0:2) to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and, as in the last two home games, went on the losing side in the early stages.

Julian Hesse, the Gütersloh coach, was not sparing with his criticism after the defeat: “We put in our worst performance of the season. We slept through the first 15 minutes and weren’t on the pitch at all. After that, it was okay until half-time. In the second half, we weren’t present at all again, which is why it’s a well-deserved defeat.”

Even though the promoted team showed its limits against Oberhausen, Hesse still drew some conclusions from the defeat: “A game like that is still important to show us how far we are from the top in terms of quality. And it showed how essential it is to show a huge energy performance in every game. We didn’t show that against Oberhausen and lacked a great deal of passion. We have to give 110 percent in every game to score.”

As in the other defeats this year against Paderborn II (1-3) and Velbert (1-2), Gütersloh got off to a very poor start and quickly found themselves two goals behind. “It’s been a recurring theme. In all three home games in the second half of the season, we were already two goals behind after 15 or 20 minutes,” the FCG coach was annoyed.

We now have a slightly longer week. We want to use it to recover first, because the English week took a lot of energy. Then we’ll try to get three points at the Tivoli.

Nico Buckmaier

Gütersloh’s midfielder Nico Buckmaier had also imagined a different result. Especially because he himself was active for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in the 2021/22 season. He made 29 appearances in the cloverleaf shirt, scoring four goals and providing two assists. “Before the game, I would have said: nice to see the guys again. But after they beat us 4-0 at home, it hurts a little bit more,” said Buckmaier.

The 31-year-old is also concerned about the opening phases of the last home games. “I don’t think it’s a motivation thing or that we’re not awake. But we have to see to it that we turn it off. Especially when you’re up against such an experienced team as Oberhausen early on, then it’s a completely different game,” explained the Bochum native.

The Gütersloh team cannot afford to get off to another false start against their next opponents, league leaders Alemannia Aachen. The two clubs will face each other in the imperial city next Saturday (February 24, 2 p.m.). For Buckmaier, it’s a highlight: “These are the games we worked very hard for last year to be in this league. Nevertheless, it’s also a game where three points are up for grabs. We’ve got a slightly longer week now. We want to use it to recover first, because the English week took a lot out of us. Then we’ll try to get three points at the Tivoli.”
