“We’ll win the cup without Ultras” – RWE celebrates victory over RWO

Rot-Weiss Essen have once again won the Lower Rhine Cup. As in 2023, RWE also won the 2024 edition this time with a 3:0 win over Rot-Weiß Oberhausen.

Now Rot-Weiss Essen can once again emphasize how successful the 2023/2024 season was: seventh place in the 3rd division and victory in the Lower Rhine Cup! A great round for the Essen team.

RWE defeated neighbors RWO 3:0 and can look forward to the lucrative DFB Cup participation, including a secure income of around 350,000 euros (home game included, editor’s note). Of course, this is also great news for squad planner Marcus Steegmann and sports director Christian Flüthmann. RWE has thus defended its title from last year. And all this without the Essen ultra group – Forecasting reported.

Rot-Weiss Essen got off to a flying start: after just two minutes, the ball hit the post after a shot from Sascha Voelcke. Luck for RWO!

RWE kept going and were clearly superior to Oberhausen in the opening minutes. The team from the Regionalliga West first had to find their feet at Hafenstraße. Essen had what felt like 80 percent possession. But apart from Voelcke’s goal at the near post, RWE were unable to create any goalscoring opportunities worth mentioning

After 17 minutes, the visitors got their first shot on target: Moritz Stoppelkamp took a shot from 20 meters, but the ball went wide.

After around 20 minutes, the Cloverleafs then got better and more courageous. Mike Terranova’s team survived Essen’s first phase of pressure unscathed.

After half an hour, Oberhausen got better and better and took the initiative. After 38 minutes, Cottrell Ezekwem got on the end of a Stoppelkamp corner, but his attempt went over the goal.

At the other end: After an RWE counter-attack via Isaiah Young and Leonardo Vonic, the ball landed with Voelcke, who shot straight from 18 meters, but his attempt clearly missed the target. Vonic (44) tried again with a header from a corner, but Robin Benz was on hand.

After the break, Thomas Eisfeld came on for the weak Cedric Harenbrock – and this change by Christoph Dabrowski proved to be spot on. Eisfeld played a sugar pass to Voelcke, Essen’s number two started with his speed into the gap and stayed cool in front of Benz – 1:0 for RWE after 50 minutes

13 minutes later it happened: Voelcke and Eisfeld played well together again, Voelcke was then fouled and a penalty was awarded – captain Vinko Sapina stepped up and scored to make it 2:0 (63′). RWO tried everything once more, but the regional league representatives could not really pose a threat to the third division team. Stoppelkamp (73) and Ezekwem (76, 82), who hit the post, had the best chances for RWO. Ron Berlinski (83) made it all clear with the 3:0. It remained a 3:0 victory for Rot-Weiss Essen. “We’ll win the cup without the Ultras,” could be heard echoing through the stadium on Hafenstrasse after the 2:0 goal
