SSVg Velbert landed a blow on matchday 20 of the Regionalliga West. The team of coach Dimitrios Pappas defeated FC Gütersloh 2:1.
SSVg Velbert, bottom of the Regionalliga West table, were able to celebrate again on matchday 20 after eight winless league games in a row: The Velbert team celebrated a 2:1 away win at FC Gütersloh and thus clinched their first three-pointer since September. Cellou Diallo scored both goals for Velbert (7th, 22nd), Kevin Freiberger scored for FCG (43rd).
Velbert’s success was aided by the early dismissal of Gütersloh midfielder Allan Firmino Dantas, who was sent off after just six minutes for an emergency brake. “We’ve already had enough on our faces this season, we earned the win against Gütersloh,” said the visibly relieved Velbert coach Dimitrios Pappas at the subsequent press conference.
“We knew that Gütersloh play a lot out the back and therefore trained our pressing intensively. When we won the ball, which led to the red card, we were able to implement this directly and were able to convert the free-kick to make it 1:0. We were also able to make it 2-0 straight away,” said Pappas, praising his team.
After SSVg were not rattled by the final goal, the bottom team secured three points in the battle to stay in the league. “In the end, we deserved to win and it was a very important victory for us to get the second half of the season off to a good start,” said the 43-year-old, summing up
Normally, I’m a coach who always defends his team. But I find this action very difficult to live with.
Julian Hesse
FC Gütersloh suffered another defeat after the unsuccessful start to the second half of the season against SC Paderborn U23 (1:3). Julian Hesse, coach of the East Westphalians, was particularly angry about the red card and criticized his team for it: “Normally, I’m a coach who always defends his team. But I find this action very difficult to live with,” said Hesse, alluding to the suspension of Allan Firmino Dantas.
“We’ve been talking all week about not wanting to build up flat because the pitch is so difficult to play on. We’ve said 50 times that we want to build up the game with long balls in order to gain confidence. That’s why it’s incomprehensible to me how we build up flat in the first action. In the end, it kills the game,” said the FCG manager, criticizing the poor implementation of his idea.
FC Gütersloh therefore remain in tenth place in the table, but can still be displaced by SC Paderborn II. Both Velbert and Gütersloh are facing an English week. While Hesse’s eleven play against SC Wiedenbrück in the East Westphalia derby (February 6, 7.30 p.m.), the Bergisch team will host Rot-Weiß Oberhausen at the same time.
