Rot-Weiss Essen has still not secured its place in the third division. But in the background, of course, the planning for the coming season is underway.
Rot-Weiss Essen is planning the squad for the 2023/2024 season in the background. And, of course: We are currently in such a phase that many players’ names are circulating in the clubs’ rumours. This is also the case at Hafenstraße.
Marcus Steegmann confirmed to RevierSport that RWE was interested in Antonio Jonjic (Erzgebirge Aue). According to our information, the striker had also been offered a contract. The 23-year-old attacker had also been offered a contract by SV Waldhof Mannheim. But Jonjic, who has scored five goals and set up four others in 14 matches this season, ultimately opted for SV Wehen Wiesbaden. The Hessians are still playing for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga.
2nd division, a good keyword: Because according to our information – see also here – RWE also knocked on Vincent Vermeij’s (SC Freiburg II) door.
But according to Steegmann, the Essen team has no chance with the 28-year-old 15-goal man from Freiburg’s reserve team. The reason: the former MSV Duisburg striker also favours a move to the 2nd Bundesliga. According to RS information, top third-league clubs and several second-league clubs are after Vermeij. Steegmann told our editorial team: “Vincent Vermeij is an outstanding striker, but as of today not realistic for us.” RWE CEO Marcus Uhlig has already made similar comments on the rumour surrounding Simon Terodde.
No Jonjic, no Vermeij, no Terodde, no Hendrik Weydandt – RS also reported: The search for a successor to Simon Engelmann will continue at Rot-Weiss Essen. At least this week, before the match against Halleschen FC, nothing will happen in terms of new arrivals. After six departures so far, the fans will have to wait for new faces at Hafenstraße. But: They will come – not only strikers, but also many other new players.
