The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has been underway for over a week now – and the group stage is slowly but surely coming to an end. On Wednesday, the last matchday will take place in Groups C+D. Then it will also be decided who will advance from the groups to the round of 16. Theoretically, everyone could still make it.
Our colleague Sam Ashoo is in Doha for Euronews. He comments: “This Wednesday is a big day for Denmark, who must beat Australia if they still want a chance to qualify for the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But the Socceroos can also afford a draw if Tunisia fail to beat France. The Bleus are already qualified after Kylian Mbappe’s brace against the Danes on Saturday. After a strong European Championship, Denmark were expected by some to do well in Group D, perhaps even win the group. They were unlucky against the world champions and it would be a surprise if they failed at the first hurdle. “
Poland can be most confident of making it to the last 16 from their group. They have to win or draw against Argentina. If they lose, it will be by a maximum difference of two goals and if the parallel match ends in a draw at the same time. But there are also scenarios in which it will be really tight for Poland: If they lose 2-0 against Argentina and Mexico wins 2-0 against Saudi Arabia, it comes down to the fair play rule.
It would be important for Argentina to win against Poland to ensure they progress. If the match ends in a draw, then Argentina also need a draw or a win by Mexico with at least a two-goal difference in the parallel match. If Argentina lose against Poland, then the World Cup is over for them.
The Saudis need a win against Mexico to advance to the last 16. However, the Saudis should also be happy with a draw if Argentina loses in the parallel match.
It will be difficult for Mexico to progress, as they will have to rely on others. In theory, however, everything is still possible for the Mexicans. They will advance if they win against Saudi Arabia and Argentina loses against Poland at the same time. If there is a draw in the parallel match while Mexico wins against the Saudis, then it comes down to goal difference
