Why Fabian Rüth is currently difficult to sell

Rot-Weiss Essen would like to reduce its 25-man squad in the current winter transfer window. One candidate to leave is currently difficult to place.

While arrivals at Rot-Weiss Essen are rather unlikely in this winter transfer window, something could happen on the departures side.

Or rather: Those responsible around coach Christoph Dabrowski and Christian Flüthmann would certainly like to see one or two bench players leave RWE.

One hot candidate is Fabian Rüth. The 22-year-old central midfielder no longer plays a role in Essen’s sporting considerations. Dabrowski recently told Forecasting: “Fabian is a fine person and a good footballer. But he was out for too long. My recommendation is that he gains match practice at a good level.”

But even a few days after this Dabrowski statement, there is no movement in the Rüth personnel matter. RS asked Rüth’s advisor. “It’s no secret that it’s not exactly easy to place a player who is coming off two serious injuries. He is also not being used in the test matches and is being built up slowly. The regional league could be interesting for Fabian, but the clubs are also on the edge of their seats and won’t sign a player who still has question marks behind him. We’ll have to wait and see in the middle or end of January. Fabian has to present himself in top form in a trial training session, then something could happen,” explains Thorsten Koll.

Rüth moved from TSG Hoffenheim II to Essen in January 2022. The then RWE sporting director Jörn Nowak and former coach Christian Neidhart were impressed by the Cologne-born player’s qualities after a trial training session and signed him until the summer of 2024. However, Rüth, who played 36 competitive matches for Hoffenheim II, made just six appearances in Essen.

In the summer of 2022, he was loaned out to south-west regional league side Rot-Weiß Koblenz, but suffered a serious injury. First a shoulder injury put him out of action for more than three months, then he tore his cruciate ligament. For Fabian Rüth, 2023 was a year to forget. 2024 can only get better – perhaps soon with a new employer
