Rot-Weiss Essen slipped to 15th place after losing 5-0 to SC Verl. Andreas Wiegel was annoyed beyond measure.
Collectively, Rot-Weiss Essen showed a very poor performance against SC Verl on Saturday afternoon.
The result was a clear 0:5 home defeat.
Once again, the necessary consistency was lacking up front and defensively, the effective opponent was invited to score in the second half. RWE boss Marcus Uhlig spoke afterwards of an “absolute cheek”.
The mood of right-back Andreas Wiegel was no different when he walked through the catacombs with his head down for an interview. The experienced former second-division pro couldn’t explain the performance. “It’s very, very hard to put words to what just happened. We just played a second dirt half. In the second half, we still tried to play a little more pressure at the beginning, but what happened afterwards, we all have to question ourselves – whether that’s all we’re capable of,” Wiegel appeared speechless.
The 32-year-old, who is actually one of the top performers but also had a really bad day against Verl, was also annoyed about the lack of fightback after falling behind: “If the basics and basic virtues are missing, then it will be difficult. The fact that we concede so many goals in two games is completely unacceptable. What made us so strong in the weeks before was that we defended consistently at the back and conceded very few goals. That is precisely the shortcoming. We definitely have to blame ourselves for not defending consistently.”
Wiegel also understood after the final whistle that the fans acknowledged the team’s subterranean performance with a catcall. The Paderborn native explained:
“I think the poorest sows are the fans. They give everything every game and are there for us. That the fans are angry and dissatisfied after a 0:5 is absolutely understandable. It’s completely normal to get hit on the head. We have a lot to make up for. “
The only answer Rot-Weiss Essen can give on the pitch is next Friday evening (October 13, 7pm): RWE will then be the guests of Borussia Dortmund’s second team at Signal-Iduna-Park. Essen’s right-back has a clear strategy for this clash: “We’ve got ourselves into a mess and now it’s up to us to get out of it again.
