On Wednesday, Germany starts the World Cup against Japan. Here you can find out where this and the other matches of the day will be broadcast on TV.
While football fans were used to watching all 64 games on free TV at past World Cups, Magenta TV has secured the broadcasting rights for the current World Cup in Qatar – ARD and ZDF will still show 48 games. Here is an overview of where today’s matches – including Germany – can be seen.
The first World Cup Wednesday starts with Group F. Morocco will face Croatia at 11 am. Despite top players like Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain) or Hakim Ziyech (FC Chelsea), the Africans will only have an outsider’s chance against the runners-up led by Luka Modric (Real Madrid) – to be watched on ARD and Magenta TV.
This will be followed by Germany’s World Cup opener, which fans and players are longing for. Kick-off for Hansi Flick’s team is at 2 pm. Their opponents, Japan, are packed with Bundesliga professionals, including captain Maya Yoshida (FC Schalke) and Takuma Asano (VfL Bochum). This match will also be shown on both ARD and Magenta TV – with the pay-TV provider already starting its pre-match coverage at 9 am.
The other match in Germany’s Group E will be between Spain and Costa Rica from 5pm. Here, too, the roles are clearly distributed in favour of the Europeans. At 8 pm, perennial favourites Belgium will face Canada, who booked their World Cup ticket for the first time in 36 years with Bayern star Alphonso Davies. Both matches are also on free and pay TV on ARD and Magenta TV.
