The third matchday in Qatar began with a shock: Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1 in their opening Group C match.
The South American champions had arrived with a run of 36 unbeaten games, superstar Lionel Messi opening the scoring in the 10th minute.
But Saudi Arabia – ranked 51st in the world – made a comeback in the second half. First came the equaliser in the 48th minute, and then just five minutes later the winning goal for the Green Falcons.
For Lionel Messi, his fifth and last World Cup is supposed to be a big showcase. But in the opening match against Saudi Arabia, the superstar is as hapless as in many of his tournament appearances. (C)https://t.co/f85O4Xhg1O

In the other Group C match, Mexico and Poland battled to a goalless draw.
Defending champions France were also briefly in shock – underdogs Australia took the lead right at the start. But that didn’t last long, France tried to take control of the game after the unsuccessful start – and still needed half an hour to equalise. After the change of ends, France took control – and mercilessly crushed the Socceroos.

The still reigning world champions walked off the pitch with a 4-1 win – and now lead Group D ahead of Denmark, Tunisia and last-place Australia.
Saturday sees the second group game for both: France play Denmark, and Australia take on Tunisia.
