Spain coach Luis Enrique has selected a young team for the World Cup in Qatar. There is no standout star in the Spanish team, but plenty of young talent.

Pedri in particular shone in the early stages two days before his 20th birthday. His fine passes saw Olmo and Marco Asensio just miss the goal. Olmo completed a chip from Gavi, just 18, to make it 1-0 – Spain’s 100th World Cup goal.

King Felipe VI sat in the VIP box at Al-Thumama Stadium to witness Spain’s highest World Cup win.

Japan beat Germany in opening match

A new day, a new surprise at the World Cup: Japan beat Germany 2-1. Hansi Flick’s team had nine wasted shots on goal, the only goal being a penalty. But the goals of the fighting Japanese – who only needed four attempts – sent them into raptures.
