Tuesday’s clash with Morocco should help Spain forget their defeat to Japan in the group stage. The round of 16 clash takes place at the Education City Stadium and although Luis Enrique’s side are favourites, they know they need to step up a gear
Spain vs Morocco
La Roja finished second in Group E, while Morocco’s Atlas Lions advanced as Group F winners after a blistering start to the World Cup. With the support of their fans, Morocco could become the fourth African team to reach the quarter-finals.
The two sides last met in 2018, when Spain denied Morocco victory with a last-second equaliser. It could be a similarly tight contest in Qatar.
Switzerland vs Portugal
Later in the day, Portugal face Switzerland. Our euronews correspondent Sam Ashoo reports on the action on the ground in Doha:
“All eyes are on Cristiano Ronaldo at Portugal’s training ground as he prepares to face Switzerland in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The five-time Ballon dor winner has yet to find his feet in this competition, but he and the rest of Fernando Santos’ squad will fancy their chances against a nation that has not reached the quarter-finals since 1954.
For the Swiss, former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has once again proved to be their star, scoring in the big win over Serbia earlier this week.
Earlier in the week he also spoke highly of the aforementioned Ronaldo, saying: ‘You must not write him off’, which was almost a warning to his teammates. The winner of this match will face the winner of the Spain v Morocco match. It will be another interesting week here in Qatar. “
