Shkodran Mustafi is currently without a club, but still wants to continue playing professional soccer. The 2014 World Cup champion already has plans for the time after his career.
World Cup soccer champion Shkodran Mustafi would like to get his coaching license after his time as a professional. The currently unemployed 31-year-old announced this in an interview with the pay-TV channel Sky published on Saturday.
Whether the defender will find a new club again is an open question. Most recently, Mustafi played for the Spanish second division club UD Levante, where his contract expired at the end of the previous season.
“I had to have another heel operation after I played in pain towards the end of last season in Spain,” said Mustafi, who was part of the German World Cup-winning team in Brazil in 2014. After the operation and rehabilitation, he is keeping fit and hoping for a chance to play professional football again.
It’s not so easy when you have to train on your own, the former Arsenal and Schalke pro conceded. “The longer you don’t have a club, the more difficult it becomes, I’m aware of that. I have a few ideas in case I don’t sign with a club, but I haven’t set myself any deadlines in terms of time.”
Mustafi will be following next year’s European Championship in Germany as an expert for MagentaTV. Working in television is a cool experience. “You’re always getting to know new people, new ideas and philosophies. One thing is at the back of my mind: I definitely want to get my coaching license,” he explained, but also said: ‘I see it as a big problem that the coaches are always the first to lose their jobs. That’s the only thing that puts me off in terms of my plans to work as a coach.’
