It was not a glorious Champions League evening at all for Jürgen Klopp and his FC Liverpool: The Reds had a 2-0 lead against Real Madrid, but the Spaniards caught up spectacularly.

Darwin Nunez (4th) and Mohamed Salah (14th) had scored the first goals – Vinicius Junior (21st, 36th), Eder Militao (47th) and Karim Benzema (55th, 67th) also with a brace then impressed.

Toni Kroos was allowed on the pitch for Real in the 87th minute after overcoming illness.

269 days after winning the Champions League final, coach Carlo Ancelotti’s side once again lived up to their reputation as Liverpool’s fearsome opponents.

The capital club from Spain are the defending champions. The Reds finished second in Group A with 15 points due to unfavourable goal difference.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, dominated Group F with 13 points, finishing ahead of RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk, among others.

The clash between Liverpool and Real Madrid is a rematch of the final of the last UEFA Champions League.

A few months ago, the Madrilenians lifted their fourteenth Champions League trophy when they won 1-0 in the final through a Vinicius Junior goal.

The two clubs are starting to get used to each other as Liverpool – Real Madrid was also the pairing for the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, with the side from the Spanish capital emerging victorious from the double-header (3-1, 0-0).

The second leg in Madrid will take place on 15 March.
