On Friday evening, Wuppertaler SV and FC Gütersloh had reason to celebrate. The U21 team of 1. FC Köln can also rejoice in what feels like a victory after an incredible comeback.
On German Unity Day, five matches of the eleventh matchday in the Regionalliga West were on the schedule. Rot-Weiß Oberhausen won 1-0 against SC Paderborn’s U21 team.
Wuppertaler SV made a statement at 1. FC Bocholt. Coach Sebastian Tyrala’s team defeated Bocholt 3-1 (1-0) at Hünting. Levin Müller put WSV ahead in the first half (37′). There were no further goals until the 78th minute, when Celal Aydogan made it 2-0. Ronay Arabaci even added a third goal (83′). FCB had the last word, scoring a consolation goal through an own goal by Hans-Juraj Hartmann (86′).
There were also plenty of goals in the “small” Rhineland derby between Fortuna Düsseldorf II and 1. FC Köln II. The two teams drew 3-3 after the game seemed all but lost for Cologne after 45 minutes. Düsseldorf led 3-0 at half-time and had a numerical advantage after Cologne keeper Mikolaj Marutzki was shown a red card (10th minute).
But FC showed incredible energy and actually managed to take a point because they scored three goals in the second half despite being a man down. Among others, professional Sargis Adamyan turned the game around with the 2-3 (75th minute). The equalizer came in the 90th minute – incredible!
The second derby of the day also had a lot to offer. FC Gütersloh narrowly prevailed 1-0 (0-0) against SC Wiedenbrück in the East Westphalian neighborhood duel. There were no goals in the first half, with both teams evenly matched and not giving an inch. The outcome of the game was completely open until the final minutes, when the Heidewald exploded in the 84th minute: Jan-Lukas Liehr, an ex-Wiedenbrück player of all people, sank the ball precisely into the left corner. Sascha Mölders’ team then threw everything forward and ran into a costly counterattack in the 87th minute. Timo Kondziella had no choice but to make a last-ditch tackle and was shown a straight red card. Things then got heated again, but FCG held on to secure the three points in the derby.
SSVg Velbert and SV Rödinghausen faced each other in a basement battle in the afternoon. And even at the eleventh attempt, the newly promoted team from the Bergisches Land region failed to secure their first three points, with Velbert losing 3-2 despite leading 2-1 at half-time.
