Wuppertaler SV will lose its top scorer. Charlison Benschop is moving to the 3rd division. He is expected to attend his medical check on Monday.
Forecasting had already reported a few days ago that Alemannia Aachen were interested in Charlison Benschop’s services.
Now our editorial team has learned that the 34-year-old striker has opted for Alemannia. He will terminate his contract in Wuppertal, which runs until June 30, 2025, and sign for Aachen. He was one of the highest earners at WSV. As is well known, Wuppertal are reducing their budget and will be rid of Benschop’s salary in future. According to our information, Aachen will not transfer any transfer fee to Wuppertal. According to our information, Viktoria Köln were also interested in Benschop. However, the attacker is moving to the Regionalliga West champions in Aachen.
Benschop, who has scored 13 goals for Wuppertaler SV this season and set up a further nine goals, is expected in the imperial city for his medical check on Monday (May 6, 2024).
Looking at his CV, 120 games in the Dutch Eredivisie, 27 games in the French Ligue 1 and a total of 98 appearances in the two highest divisions in Germany stand out. In each of his eleven professional appearances, Benschop has demonstrated an exceptional eye for goal.
He scored 25 goals for Fortuna Düsseldorf, 19 goals for RKC Waalwijk, 12 goals each for Apollon Limassol and De Graafschap – and currently 13 goals for WSV.
The “Regionalliga West with Wuppertaler SV” mission in the summer of 2023 – when Benschop moved from De Graafschap to the Wupper – was primarily due to family reasons: “My wife and children live in Krefeld. I didn’t want to be any further away from them and wanted to play closer to home from now on. That’s why I decided on Wuppertaler SV,” Benschop said at the time.
From Krefeld to Wuppertal it was around 60 kilometers each way, from Krefeld to Aachen it will be around 100 kilometers for Benschop in the future. But the man from Curacao will gladly take on these extra 40 kilometers. After all, he will be chasing goals for Alemannia in the 3rd division and will often appear in front of over 20,000 fans at Aachen’s Tivoli.
