Wuppertaler SV receives solar panels that could supply 100 private single-family homes per year.
Good news for Wuppertaler SV: the fourth-placed team in the Regionalliga West will be able to produce its electricity in a much more climate-neutral way in future.
The traditional club from the Bergisch region will have hundreds of solar panels installed. Marvin Klotzkowsky, board member of Wuppertaler SV, explains: “The acquisition and rapid implementation of the solar systems at the Stadion am Zoo are extremely pleasing for us at Wuppertaler SV. We see this as an important step in our efforts towards sustainability and would like to firmly anchor this component in our strategic orientation in the future.”
Work will begin in March. The 700 to 800 solar modules will eventually form the lettering “Wuppertal”. The system should be fully installed in April.
The initiative arose from a cooperation between the building management of the city of Wuppertal (GMW) and Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW), which aims to increase the rate of expansion of photovoltaic systems.
The special feature of the model is that GMW provides the roof surfaces of municipal buildings, while WSW installs and operates PV systems and ensures that the building is supplied with renewable electricity. Surplus electricity is fed into the grid and used for other municipal buildings. The PV system on the stadium roof is part of a new supply model between the two partners.
The PV system is expected to achieve a nominal output of 350 kilowatts and generate around 300,000 kilowatt hours per year, which corresponds to the consumption of around 100 private single-family homes.
Also important: due to the stadium’s listed complex, a listed building permit had to be obtained, which is why the modules have to be installed parallel to the roof surface.
