Rot-Weiß Oberhausen are through to the last 16 of the Niederrheinpokal after a 2:1 (0:0) victory over MSV Duisburg. Coach and players were overjoyed.
With only twelve points from nine games, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen did not have a good start to the season in the Regionalliga West. On Friday evening, the derby in the Lower Rhine Cup against MSV Duisburg took place under floodlights. For Mike Terranova’s team, it was a great opportunity to celebrate success in front of their home crowd and possibly turn the tide for the coming league games.
After 95 minutes it was clear: RWO had achieved this goal. Thanks to a committed and courageous performance, the Kleeblätter deservedly defeated the favourites from the 3rd division 2:1 (0:0) in front of 9727 fans. Oberhausen thus qualified for the round of sixteen – then they will travel to Regionalliga relegated KFC Uerdingen.
Terranova was overjoyed after the final whistle that his team had been rewarded for their hard work: “I am very proud of my team. We started the game really well and could have been leading at the break. You could see how important it is to have certain players with a certain amount of experience on the pitch. Of course, we were also lucky that Stoppelkamp was out for MSV. I’m happy that we were able to give the fans a win in front of a great crowd. “

Right-back Nils Winter, who put Oberhausen on the winning track with his goal to make it 1-0, also praised the team’s performance and spoke of a well-deserved progress: “For us, it was a liberating blow. In exactly one week’s time (30 September, 7.30pm), Rot-Weiß Oberhausen will also continue in the league with a home match. Then the strong promoted team 1. FC Düren will be the guests at the Niederrhein stadium. The Terranova team gained enough self-confidence from the derby coup against MSV Duisburg. Now RWO must take the momentum into the league.
