Amin Younes is having a very disappointing season at Schalke so far. He plays no role under Miron Muslic – now he is speaking out about the situation for the first time.
When FC Schalke 04 meets 1. FC Magdeburg this Saturday (1 p.m./Sky), former national player Amin Younes will once again not be there – coach Miron Muslic made that clear at the press conference ahead of the match.
“Amin Younes was not an issue once during the seven-week preparation period, not once in the first five match days. He is not an issue for us internally either. We have a path, and we are following it consistently. It’s about profiles that fit our playing style. Of course, Amin has exceptional skills in one-on-one situations and in his creativity, but that’s only one phase of the game. The other three or four are also incredibly important. We are well positioned in that regard and will continue on this path together,” said Muslic.
Since the 43-year-old coach is unlikely to deviate from his game plan anytime soon, Younes continues to face the prospect of a regular spot in the stands. Despite his great footballing qualities, he has not yet made it into the squad this season. “Not an easy few weeks for me,” the 32-year-old wrote on Instagram about his personal situation, giving a glimpse of what is going on inside him. However, Younes is refraining from publicly complaining about Muslic or causing trouble because of his exclusion. “Of course, I accept the challenge. Team training with the guys is still fun, I continue to give 100 percent every day, remain patient and try to stay positive,” he wrote to his nearly 80,000 followers on Instagram, adding: “Thank you as always for your support; that always remains something special at Schalke.”
Younes received support not only from many fans, but also from his teammates. Captain Kenan Karaman also spoke positively about Younes after the recent 0-1 defeat against Kiel and hinted that he would welcome a chance for the former national player.
Amin Younes has been under contract in Gelsenkirchen since the summer of 2024. In 25 competitive games, he has scored two goals and provided three assists so far. The attacking midfielder had his best spell at Ajax Amsterdam between 2015 and 2018, where he even managed to dribble his way into the German national team. He has also been under contract with SSC Napoli, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Borussia Mönchengladbach, among others.
