Young convincing in Elversberg, Ríos Alonso criticises himself

Rot-Weiss Essen’s streak is broken! After the 0:3 defeat at SV Elversberg, we spoke to José-Enrique Ríos Alonso and Isaiah Young.

It happened on Friday evening. After nine games without defeat, Rot-Weiss Essen conceded a 0:3 defeat at SV Elversberg. While the league leaders from the Kaiserlinde were able to extend their lead at the top of the table, RWE had to travel home empty-handed.

And this despite the fact that the Hafenstraßen eleven was the better team in the first half and had several chances to take the lead. However, as in the last few games, they lacked consistency on the offensive. RWE scored only one goal in the last three games.

Centre-back José-Enrique Ríos Alonso had a similar view: “We started well and played a very good first half. We had two or three hundred per cent chances. We have to work on that. Unfortunately, in the second half, we weren’t as handy or calm on the ball.”

Winger Isaiah Young agreed with his teammate. The 24-year-old played the best first half of his season and harmonised well with Simon Engelmann and Thomas Eisfeld. Almost every offensive action went through the US boy.

It hurts. We didn’t score a goal, we can’t do that. The first half was really good from us. But when you don’t put the chances in against a good opponent, that’s what happens.

Isaiah Young.

Only Lawrence Ennali was unable to make an impact and committed too many simple ball losses. “It hurts. We didn’t score a goal, we can’t do that. The first half was really good from us. But when you don’t create chances against a good opponent, that’s what happens. After the break, we didn’t move enough without the ball. It takes strength to play against a team that has as much possession as Elversberg,” Young explained afterwards in the catacombs.

In the second 45 minutes, the league leaders were bursting with enthusiasm and RWE had hardly anything to counter. Three goals against were the result. Ríos Alonso, who is otherwise playing a good season, took the blame for the 0:2 from Essen’s point of view through Nick Woltemade (70th) due to an errant pass in the build-up to the game: “Elversberg’s offence is strong as hell. If you let them play, it’s hard to stop Elversberg. But the second goal against was my mistake. I should have cleared the ball differently. It was my mistake. “
