Youngster back in squad – Füllkrug in starting eleven against PSG?

Borussia Dortmund will start their Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain without any major personnel problems. Will Niclas Füllkrug start from the beginning?

Niclas Füllkrug can continue to hope for a starting eleven debut for his new club Borussia Dortmund. “Niclas handled the 30 minutes in Freiburg well. We’ll see tomorrow whether it’s enough for more,” said BVB coach Edin Terzic one evening before the Bundesliga club’s start to the Champions League group stage at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday (9pm/Amazon Prime).

It would be the first appearance in the top flight for the last-minute transfer from Bremen, who missed the DFB team’s recent internationals against Japan (1:4) and France (2:1) due to thigh problems.

Füllkrug had played for around half an hour in Borussia’s 4-2 win at Freiburg last Saturday. He scored his first goal with an assist for Donyell Malen to make it 2-2. In the match against the title co-favourites from the French capital, the 30-year-old international striker could replace Sébastien Haller, who has been in poor form lately, from the start.

And it is not only in the centre of attack that Terzic has several options. Dortmund made the trip with almost their entire squad. Only Thomas Meunier and Mateu Morey, who have been injured for a longer period of time, are not available, as well as Julien Duranville, who still has to catch up on training. For the first time this season, attacker Giovanni Reyna is part of the line-up.

In addition to Paris, BVB will face Newcastle United and AC Milan in the preliminary round. With all due respect to the French champions, Terzic does not see BVB without a chance: “We know that we have enough quality to be able to annoy title aspirants.”

In contrast to the first games, he said, Borussia are not going into the match as favourites and should expect less possession. “You know that PSG play very dominant football. We always have to be on our toes and very alert,” Terzic said. (with RS)
