Youngster Wätjen to play in CL second leg in Paris despite A-level exams

After his Bundesliga debut, Kjell-Arik Wätjen could also feature for BVB in the Champions League – despite taking his Abitur exam on the day of the semi-final.

After his debut in the Bundesliga in the 5:1 win against FC Augsburg, Kjell-Arik Wätjen is set for the next highlight in his still very young career. The 18-year-old Borussia Dortmund talent is in the squad for the Champions League semi-final second leg at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening (9pm, RS live ticker).

The announcement was made by sporting director Sebastian Kehl as he departed for the French capital on Monday. At the weekend, it was reported that Wätjen would have to miss out – due to a school-leaving exam on Tuesday. But BVB will fly the youngster in afterwards. “We will then take him to Paris and he will be able to join us tomorrow,” said Kehl.

The midfielder delivered a convincing performance in his first outing for Borussia. He played over 90 minutes and set up Marco Reus’ 4:1 goal with a strong pass. However, it seems doubtful whether coach Edin Terzic will actually give Wätjen the next few minutes at PSG.

Terzic can count on almost his entire team to defend the 1:0 from the first leg. Only Ramy Bensebaini and Julien Duranville are certain to miss out. Karim Adeyemi and Sebastien Haller, who have been struggling recently, are also part of the squad that set off on Monday

Terzic is also counting on the will of his team against the star ensemble of the French. “The Paris Saint-Germain project has been built to win this title. That is their mission. But we have a huge dream – and we want to fulfill it,” he said at the press conference late on Monday afternoon, announcing: “If necessary, we’ll run 20 kilometers more.”

However, it’s not just about self-confidence and resilience. Terzic: “We also need to have a good plan. We need a mix, a right balance in the game. “
